What’s the most underrated life skill?
All sorts of things interfere with this skill. You could make a long list of distractions but here’s a few that are the most avoidable.
Talking to someone and they are looking at their mobile device. Of course, I never do that! (Wasn’t yesterday about lying?) it drives you scatty* when that happens. It’s often followed by “are you listening to me?” Answers on a postcard please.
Talking to someone and they are watching the TV. I think it’s fair to say that most people have the kind of TV service where they can pause live shows. Then face your interrogator and try again.
Or you could be so absorbed with something – for me that’s in my creative drive – that you might as well be on a different planet. Restart the conversation if you don’t mind.
There are probably some exceptions to not listening very carefully. Like someone has a weapon in your face. Very difficult to concentrate then I imagine.
You’re driving very fast because you’re late, then a small child/animal runs into the road. That’s a permitted distraction I think. Difficult to listen when you’re about to run someone/thing over.
Blah blah blah. I could go on but, as I’m sure you’ll agree, I’ll stop now. After all, you’re probably not listening anyway!
* “scatty“ English colloquial for insane or at the least not with all your marbles – see “scatty”.
Happy Tuesday!
