What’s a movie or book that inspired you to travel?
. . . Or below! I’ve never been inspired by a book to travel. Or a movie.
Because my mother was born in Europe but my Dad was English, I was, very early in my life, taken to my Mum’s birth land along with my younger brother to visit relatives. This was every year from about 9 to my early teens.
Of which (relatives I mean) there seemed to be 100s! My love for Zakinthos, Athens and all things Greek had it’s origins in these holidays/homesickness returns. For which I’m also eternally grateful as it helped me to get a sense of the meaning of hospitality, love and affection in family, wonder for all the history associated with those places and making new friends.
The impact is so great that I consider myself to be Greek mostly although I prefer citizen of the world. It’s true to say though that it meant that I’m never afraid or doubtful about traveling anywhere on the planet.
So I’ve been to France, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and, on a road trip as a teenager, we went through Yugoslavia (as it was then), Albania, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Even the US of A has been on my passport. New Orleans to be precise.
Mustn’t forget Norway! That was for a wedding in Summer time so I’ve experienced 24 hours of light! That’s really bizarre. I’d just visited some friends after all the celebrations and when I went to return to my digs* I looked around me and then at my watch. I was astonished to read 3.00a.m. 3.00a.m! Seriously?! Amazing.
Somebody said “travel broadens the mind”, and I can’t disagree with that sentiment. I often find that people with a massive prejudice against another race or ethnicity have probably never traveled anywhere further than their back garden.
Then again, they might just be small minded, narrow thinking morons that require a frontal lobotomy. Just saying.
I didn’t need a book or a movie to broaden my horizons. If you get the opportunity to get away to somewhere you’ve never been before, grab the chance with both hands and just open your mind and enjoy it for what it is.

*. . . “Digs” = English colloquial word for somewhere you temporarily stay. Like a Bed and Breakfast but more informal I.e., you’re not paying! The best places ever!
