“I did it my way!”

What’s a time you followed your gut and it turned out to be exactly right?

Ol’ blue eyes had a point. Sometimes you’ve just got to do what you’ve got to do.

My ‘career’ in work started in a Department store, in the DIY department. I was a teenager with no experience, training was just a word in the dictionary that was only used if you were in the military or a womens knitting group*.

Very soon I’d changed to working in a camping shop. This was good fun for a couple of years. I worked with a hippy who thought it was cool to stuff tent poles with gunpowder from collected fireworks and blow up rabbit warrens. Far out dude!

My boss was really cool because he had a series 3, v12, E-type Jag. His French wife was flipping gorgeous with an amazing accent. 1st crush. ☺️

Then I went for something that meant I didn’t have to work on a Saturday. Yay! And there was much rejoicing. It was in a car accessories warehouse [not Amazon size! Just, y’know medium flavour] which was fun. I learned new things but it all was very pedestrian, if you get my drift.

Then one of the reps^ retired. I had an interview and got the job. This balloon soon popped however when I realised that his old mates were all retiring too and garages were closing down left, right and centre. No market, no sales. Zero training, just me and my self belief.

Then I went retail again. Don’t ask me! I still hated working on a Saturday but needs must when the devil drives.

Soon got to be a manager of a branch, still selling, learned how to window dress.

Long story short: started direct selling and after much training and great professional insights from excellent sales managers my record began and I attained one position where I started with a business with a 250k turnover and within 5 years hit a million.

The reward? That’s another story.

*”Womens knitting group” – before you ladies jump down my throat! It’s just a colloquial English saying that describes any group activity bordering on boring. If you’re going to take offence,  don’t forget the gate!

^”reps” – shortened form of “representative(s)” as in Sales Representative. Just called Sales these days though I prefer my later job description: Business Development Manager. It’s what it says on the tin!
