Mississippi burning

What’s a piece of media (book, movie, song) that changed how you see the world?

was a movie in the 80’s. I’d heard about race issues in the States. I admired Martin Luther King for his courage and forthright views.

The movie stopped me in my tracks. Racism seemed a remote problem that happened elsewhere. In the movie it happens in the southern U.S. and, even in recent times, not much appears to have changed.

I have many friends from different origins. I don’t care if they’re pink with blue spots, if they are friendly then I will always reciprocate feelings of welcome and hospitality. Love, if you will.

The hate that underlines racism is totally unacceptable. It’s unworthy of anyone who wants to be a part of the human family to negatively distinguish and disrespect someone of another land just because of skin colour, how they talk and their lifestyle.

It happens of course. I’m feeling it to a certain degree here where I live. Worse, among people who should know and have been taught otherwise.

Sadly it still abounds wherever you live. The film further enhanced my sense of justice. I sometimes have difficulty controlling myself when I see or hear it close by.

At times like that, I have to remember that we all have to answer to a higher power for our actions or inactions while sojourning on this planet.

That’s a comforting thought. I don’t use it as an excuse not to do anything. I’m quite at ease pointing out this negative trait in my circle of acquaintances for instance.

And here I am telling others how I’m affected by racism. I’m not stupid and realise that it won’t stop any time soon.

I’m glad to say, it’s not a trait of mine. Hopefully it’s not one you can tolerate either.

Spread the love people!
