If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why?

I tried to learn in my teens and even got another acoustic recently. I’m familiar with some chords that seem to crop up in lots of music I listen to but, in spite of my effort, can’t seem to get it together.

Consequently, I have a lovely acoustic guitar staring at me in my studio, daring me to have another try! Every time I go in there! It stares at me accusingly, as if to say: “go on then, pick me up! What’s wrong with you? It’s easy!”

Which it isn’t of course. It requires hours of practice, an understanding of music structure and other things that I need to discover.

I don’t want to be a rock star, or a balladeer. I’d just like to create my own music and enjoy the creative experience for myself. I’ve got many videos of professional musicians playing in public, clearly enjoying what they do and I applaud them for their skill.

I love that music has so many variations and can affect your mood and pleasure. My personal music collection has many types of influences although I draw the line at military march noise (well, it’s not ‘music’ is it?).

I once saw a performer playing with an Indian group of musicians and singers. He’s quite popular in the UK. He did a cover of a TV soap theme but with an Indian Bhangra vibe! It’s flipping brilliant!

I have performed on stage. It was with a great friend of mine and we used to play weddings and musical get togethers. We did a pretty good “Buffalo Bill” as well as various impersonations. A proper lark*!

My 1st wife and I encouraged our daughter to take piano lessons and she was good. Achieved a good level and we’d perform some Phantom of the Opera for family or visitors. One of our favourite musicals.

I’m a big fan of classical guitar too. Andres Segovia for example. There’s a guy on FB who plays an amazing instrument that’s a guitar and bass (plus other variations) doing covers of classical and rock numbers. Jamie Dupois. Worth a look.
