Gloves, leather, fighting. What???

What’s a thing you were completely obsessed with as a kid?

Even I think this was weird! I had this pair of brown leather gloves, at least I think they were mine. Could have been my Dads. Long time ago.

I remember play-fighting with these gloves. In the most unusual places. I went to a religious meeting and found a spot where I could do this fighting simulation thing. I was dead embarrassed when someone noticed and asked me who was winning!

Actually embarrassed! They were gloves! Hello! Why? Seriously? Why? I haven’t got a clue.

I was 7 or 8. It must have been important or something. It’s a clear  memory but the why escapes me. Some shrink would have a field day I’m sure.

But obsession is like that, it doesn’t need a reason. The OED defines obsess as “preoccupy someone to a disturbing extent”. Tick for that box.

It’s the ‘why’ I’m struggling to answer. But then again, it’s not a particular trait I have right now. I’ve got gloves. Work gloves, winter gloves, protective gloves. I don’t fight with them at all!

I detest boxing. I find physical violence abhorrent. In any form. My father was a peaceful man. I’m a peace seeker. I’d prefer it if everyone was peaceable. Sadly,  I don’t see it very much.

Thankfully that obsession is a thing of the past. Weird how it’s such a gleaming memory. It’s not a part of me now thank goodness.

I did have tiny sets of war figures. I’d happily blow them up with bangers* in the garden. Replaying some war film I’d seen probably.

Hopefully you have control of your obsessions.

*’bangers’ a firework that you lit and all it did was go bang! Yes, very boring, I agree. Seemed like fun at the time!
