Find a way out! 🫣

Which is the best thing to do in your city?

I was brought up in a small town in Warwickshire. There were around 30,000 residents at the time and it had 1 cinema (locally known as “the flea pit”, no kidding), 5 chip shops (i.e., fish and chips to take away. Although later, we had a Greek guy who opened a large one with seating! Oh the luxury!) and a Woolworths complete with pick n mix sweeties. [And there was much rejoicing!]

The nearest theatre was in Coventry. Half hour bus ride, such fun. This city also had a car museum, several discos, and a concrete shopping centre. They didn’t SELL concrete, silly, it was made of the stuff. Pay attention.

I’m not going to make any excuses for the lack of things to do, it was a town that expanded on the back of coal mining. It must have been difficult to have some imagination as to how you’d hope to entertain blokes with large families who mainly thought telly* was the best thing after sliced bread.

This did not limit my imagination. As soon as I could drive I’d go anywhere for a good experience entertainment wise.

I soon discovered nearby places with far more interesting and inviting things to do.

I wasn’t about to adopt a small town approach to my life expectations. As soon as I realised there was a way out, I took it with both hands.

I met my 1st wife in a bar in Birmingham. They were belting out Santana and we both loved the track “Samba pa ti”. 2 years later we’re married.

Lesson? If you’re bored with where you live, don’t sit back and do nowt^ get off your butt and broaden your horizon.

*”telly” short for TV. Which is shorter than telly but you know what I mean!

^”nowt” – Yorkshire colloquial word for nothing. I’m an honorary Yorkshireman tha noz☆.

☆tha noz = don’t you know.

That’s it, there’s no more. Take those wings and fly baby!
