Creating my pieces in wood. No surprises there then!

What activities do you lose yourself in?

I find the creative process such a wonderful ‘place’ to be. You’ve seen something so beautiful in nature, so diverse in textures, colours and it’s a living thing with no preconceived ideas about what it wants to be – no, it’s just doing it’s thing.

This always blows me away and then I have the audacity to try and recreate that in my limited way. Thankfully, there seem to be others who appreciate it for what it is. Phew!

But the effort is always worth it. Choosing the right piece you want to carve, imposing your will on the material with just basic tools. Trying (oh trying so hard!) to make it look like your client wants it to look like, what a challenge!

This is sooo absorbing, I’m always astonished by how long some parts of the process take. Lost isn’t quite right, although I’m not sure what else you might bring to describe what’s happening. Lost implies that you don’t know where you’re going or the end goal, which is totally the opposite of what the process is about.

Cooking my favourite dish has a similar effect. But as long as I’m listening to some good music, the time flies. Currently listening to Peter Gabriel live tour from some years ago but brilliant stuff anyway!

Oddly, I can’t listen to music whilst carving. Some shrink somewhere might want analyze that but what the hey ho.

I’ve always loved working with wood. I still have a coffee table I made at school some decades ago! My non-functioning printer sits atop in complete contrast with my still functioning table!

Nice juxtaposition wouldn’t you say? Whatever you do, enjoy it!

Namaste.
