Think back on your most memorable road trip.
Destination: Greece! Duration: 3 days, non-stop.
What an adventure! I’d just passed my driving test so I wasn’t a designated driver (😮💨) but 2 of my brothers and a close friend did a great job.
1st stop: Dover to Calais. We decided not to go through France on the way but up to Belgium to get on the Autobahn through Germany then Switzerland, a bit of northern Italy and then Yugoslavia as it was then.
I was, and still am, totally smitten with the Swiss Alps. It was stunning! Up until Italy the roads were great and easy to traverse.
But Yugoslavia!!?? Being communist ruled at the time, their version of a motorway was cobblestones! Seriously, it’s not a joke. We had nearly 400 km of that!
That’s not the worst part. When we got to the south and as we approached the mountains on the border with Greece, we had the winding hill roads (yes, still cobbled road) and – bonus! – avalanche of boulders. Not what you want in the middle of the night!
We were all knackered by this time what with being bounced around on the cobbled highway. We hadn’t stopped in a motel on the way (there weren’t any then, well not planned) so it was a bit ‘atmospheric’ if you get my meaning!
Let’s put it this way, my brother drove through Athens with his bare feet out of the passenger window! Traffic cops were not amused!
There’s loads more but you’ll have to put up with the highlights. A bit like life – just enjoy the journey.
